development of ideas about yourself
The question "Who am I?" can be approached from various angles, e.g. philosophical, religious, etc. A psychologist will emphasize that a human being is strongly influenced by his/her environment. You learn as it were from experience who you are.
You learn to develop ideas about yourself. If you say that "this is simply the way you are", you reflect an acquired perception of yourself.
There will probably be a reason, such as that you are aware that changing yourself can be very difficult. This notion makes it practically impossible to bring about a change (e.g. the amount of test anxiety) and consequently, will have to be revised.
