Giving youself a pep-talk usually has only a temporary effect. It can serve a useful purpose, but the awareness
of difficulties may continue to obtrude itself again and again, resulting in an internal dialogue. Sometimes this is caused by not daring to face up to the facts (more information on avoidance). If you pep yourself up, beware of "impossible instructions", i.e. instructions you give yourself, which cannot be carried out. A striking example is the instruction to be "completely calm" during a test. Would you like to know more about this (physical strain ). |
